::macro-me-dia macabre::

why doth thou hate me, macro-me-dia?
thrice i've tried, and thrice you've lied
my trial download of dream-weaver
is but in my imagination
for that "unexpected end of file" error
haunts my spectacles

so rushes of inspiration
desirous of revamping the 'muse
will wait
for
a later date
when more patience abounds
and laundry doesn't overflow
into the hallway

::a walk-it man::

there is this man. i saw him this afternoon. sometimes, i see him in the morning on my way to work. he is ever walking, walking, walking. he wears a tight, shiny, athletic purple shirt and shiny, black biker shorts. he carries a 1/2 gallon carton of sparkletts in his right hand. his backpack is a permanent fixture on his shoulders.

and, i wonder of him, as i do of myself: where is he going?

::take five::

no typos, no typos! type fast!

5 minutes here before buzzers start ringing downstairs. i am cooking dinner: jerk chicken, rice, cookies (!) and a vegetable. i haven't decided what vegetable because they don't take that long so i haven't bothered to make up my mind.

what a crazy, insanely busy day! i made it to the gym (that's #3 in 3 weeks, but i'm getting more serious since i got an ipod mini: yeah!), did grocery shopping and didn't get any sweets, came home, relaxed for an hour, then started cooking dinner. my brain is pretty much a flashing blank screen at the moment, i am that much the proverbial chicken sans head.

got one of those spoofed emails from "paypal", sent to an email address that i don't have a paypal account on in the first place. very strange. i reported it. then i went to the spoofed site for fun and it was down. funny, eh?

time's up!

::duchovny defies da mind::

you just wouldn't believe how excited i got as i turned to the most recent "blogs of note" column, which is viewable here on blogger to its users on the home page after logging in to the site. i saw the words "david duchovny" and just about had an epileptic fit. clicking on the link, i was transported to his site.

much like zach braff's garden state blog, duchovny has turned his attention to the blogging masses in order to promote his feature film, house of d. i can't tell you (but i will) just how proud i am of those guys (acting like i know them personally?). and, props to david for posting audio entries: i had to play them to know if it was bona fide. because, you know, last year someone started an andy kaufman blog. it was fun, at first, then a bunch of mean people posted rude & obnoxious comments and our creative fellow swifly bowed out. it was unfortunate, but there are fakes out there. i am so impressed when stars put pretense aside (assuming they have any in the first place, but i say that as one who lingers on the sidelines in awe) and reveal their humanity: typos or blunderingly uncomfortable audioblogs invite the everyday joe in for a peak at their secret world. it's wonderfully brave and, in duchovny's case, i hope for a warm reception when house of d hits theaters.

that's april 15.

i'm now off to poke around on uci's website and figure out what my double major will be. or double major and a minor. man, the soul just wants to do it all!

::can you still feel?::

ah yes, title inspired by the Jason Falkner.

i started out my drive to class this evening listening to the doves newest album: some cities. and i thought to myself ok, it's the first listen. but nothing's grabbing me. where's the heart? haven't you done all this before, doves?

then, i crested the 73 at the toll plaza. the sun was setting and the clouds looked magificent through my slightly brownish-red tinted prescriptive sunglasses. and the drummer drummed down deep into my soul and stirred my indifference as "walk in fire" invaded my speakers. (ok, josh just killed me with his comparison to "last broadcast", but i'll resist my desire to cringe. I Love This Song!) the suset came alive at this moment. i took in the gorgeous newport coast on the horizon and revved up to 75, despite seeing one highway patrolman.

music excites me, to a fault, when i drive. the two will always go hand-in-hand, make me squirm in my seat with excitement, and increase my chances of earning a speeding ticket. i would pass another chp before exiting at bison, where i would have to cue up the track for a second listen and admire the sky painting in my rear view mirror.

coming home, i couldn't help but think of the impact john adams' chairman dances is secretly having on modern-day music. the repetitive nature of the percussion chosen to underscore the song speaks strongly to me, hailing back to my former studies as a music major. it's very minimalist, and that is something i am deeply attracted to: the groaning, droning of chords as a constant theme, changing little from chord to chord, but altogether forming a gorgeous, swimming tune. it just sings to my inner child in the deepest corners of my mind. such brilliant wanderings in music! i could just SING!

::and a one, two, three...::

i just finished typing over 1600 words and now for the revision process. i'm so relieved that "due by sunday" means "in by midnight" to most of my classmates. not that i intend to stay up as late, but so far only one of the chosen ones for this week's class-wide critique project has emailed her work to us. which steathily remains unopened in my inbox because i have to nail this my piece down tonight.

it feels amazingly good, even in this rough stage that my short story is in. loosely based on real events, it is my first fiction as an adult. if you are interested, i just might email it to you. if you ask nicely. after midnight.

in other news, we scored tickets to U2 in november care of ebay this weekend. yeah, ebay! yeah, U2!

::i will wait::

for some time now, this part of me has wondered what it would feel like to be on blogger's Blogs of Note. the influx of traffic. the comments box filling with compliments and rants about my good/bad writing. the general sense of euphoria that would overcome my being as i proudly open my inbox and sift through pages of fanmail. and now, that day has finally come!

oh, wait, it didn't. but in the same turn i've recently been invited to be part of an elusive writing group, being that i've only recently come out of the closet and admitted I Am A Writer. and i cannot begin to express how good it feels to be part of something that will encourage me in said writing endeavors. i am honored and pleased and flattered and touched. and, yeah, maybe i can do this writing thing after all.

that, folks, is the sound of one hand clapping.

::i heart jon brion::

how i wish it wasn't raining right now! it drowns my hopes of cruising up to LA for a peak at jon brion's world at the largo pub. you see, what's gotten under my skin, what has me all sixes and sevens, ready to forego the long stewing corned beef in my crockpot for dinner in order to watch the genius at work, is the soundtrack to i heart huckabees.

jon brion innovates the music industry with each new score he composes. his approach is sparse, minimalist, and rythmic. yet, he's a songwriter as well, and his tunes are heartfelt and pleading, so tender and plainly honest. what he writes is moving, and so accurately accompanies the film that you'd think the two ideas, plot and score, were birthed from the same brain, a marriage of pure instinct.

even if you didn't "get" the movies...all that existentialist blithering was a real throwback to high school studies of camus and kafka. almost too much to stand. except that i couldn't help but feel its brilliance and humorous sarcasm. nonetheless, fan or not of the film, you have to "get" this sondtrack if you have the tiniest affection for instrumental music.

as for me, it's off to dinner. *sigh* i heart jon brion.

::i wish i could poetry::

the art of writing/analyzing poetry is a mystery to me: i've quickly forgotten all i ever learned in high school about the stuff. but my interest has been piqued yet again. and yet again i struggle with Career Choices. do i lean on literary journalism (creative nonfiction) for a major, or do i more broadly take the stance of starving creative writer extraordinaire? that would be the "comparitive literature" road, i believe. at least, that's what the bulk of writers i've surveyed (not many, mind you) seem to focus on.

but poetry, wow, i just invested a small fortune at borders as i filled my basket with billy collins and diane diprima. i almost got a book of poetry by charles burkowski, but i tallied the figures and decided i didn't really need to drop another $20 on books.

getting back to poetry.... it really is an amazing medium of communication. how do I poetry? well, it's mostly, er, always been free form. and it's always exploded onto the page in a fit of emotion. when i poetry, it's as though i have no control over the composition and it pours out of me. admittedly i've never returned to a piece to edit it, but i have good intentions. i suppose it's because i've never tried, not that i haven't been given the opportunity. my dear kidchamp is a willing tutor. unlike prose, though, it's a deeper, more emotional task to reform what was written in the heat of a moment. i digress though. instead, here is a recent favorite. written by not me.
The Window, Diane DiPrima

you are my bread
and the hairline
noise
of my bones
you are almost
the sea

you are not stone
or molten sound
I think
you have no hands

this kind of bird flies backward
and this love
breaks on a windowpane
where no light talks

this is not time
for crossing tongues
(the sand here
never shifts)

I think
tomorrow
turned you with his toe
and you will
shine
and shine
unspent and underground

::walking away::

Teeth clenched hard against her thoughts
She stammered, sputtered, sighed and turned her back
"One. Two. Three," she counted in her native tongue
sand gravel baby
One. Two. Three.
Go climb a Tree
Make it stop maybe
The crying, always the crying
One. Two. Three.
Teeth clenched hard against her thoughts
sand gravel baby
The turtle withdrew its limbs in suspicion of the rain and slept.

i owe the creation of this poem to my 10 classmates who helped me through it, one line at a time. and, i thank you all for laughing. it was a fun ride, wasn't it?

::up too late::

it's really awful that i'm up this late, stressing over housework in preparation for our windows to be cleaned inside & out. what's worse are late night television informercials. all i was looking for was some background noise to quiet my thoughts and keep me company as i folded the laundry. what i got was yoga booty ballet. i am completely frozen for about three minutes, jaw to the floor. coming to, i quickly scan for something else, passing up tony danza's australia day celebration (he has a talk show? kinda cool...), and ending up with an episode of x-files that i don't remember seeing, despite the fact we own seasons 1-8. humm. mulder & scully. life is good. even night life.

::banking is...life?::

unreconciled bank statements have been breeding in my closet. one and one makes three, and i'm pouring over quicken trying to sort it all out. thank God for computers, really. otherwise i'd certainly be here for days.

some know already that i work at a bank. therefore, amongst all Americans, i should maintain the most perfect account of my, er, accounts. say it ain't so! it's not, really, any more likely that the clerk helping you at the grocery store knows that much more about cooking, so stop it already! needless to say, this post is my half-heatened attempt to free my mind of the burgeoning numbers and bills and debits and credits.

perhaps the most glorious invention in the wide-world of debtors is Automatic Bill Pay. AH! such a pleasant ring to that phrase! because of this wonderous creation, i have been able to rest easy on my checkbook-balancing-avoidance: everything is already set to be paid ON TIME. with that nifty overdraft protection in place, and my neurotic tendancy to check my balance each and every (work) day, i am safe. yeah!

i don't recommend putting off this task to anyone, however, and this post is not meant to justify my laziness. still, i haven't died or been hauled off to prison because of my lack of attention to the matter. for this, i tell you, i am extremely grateful. it is important these days to monitor your money by all means possible in order to guard against Fraud and Identity Theft.

on that note, i leave you with these instructions. go & watch some of those citibank identity theft commercials: poignant and absolutely hilarious. those actors deserve emmys, i tell ya!

::bee in my bonnet::

what moves me more than anything in this world (a huge, all-encompasing statement, i realize), is music. you might even venture to say that i am a gourmand of the stuff. i will easily gobble up most every type of music you put on my plate. i have my preferences, of course, but music is the most powerful medium in the world of the arts.

what has been enjoying a delicious trip on my tongue for at least 48 hours is the latest release from tori amos: the beekeeper. oh my gosh, the flavors swirling in my mouth have been so sweet, so savory, so sensual. i am moved to the core of my being (have i over-used that phrase yet?). she makes me wanna dance in my car. and, coming home from my midterm last night, after enjoying a five minute scream-fest in the privacy of my car from the pure explosion of math within in my brain (6 straight hours of pouring over word problems, probabilities and formulas which were beginning to make my eyes bleed!) i was spotted singing along to witness by some neighborhood folk out walking their golden retriever. did i mention it was almost 10 o'clock at night? oh, how i had been screaming! oh, the glorious relief of the torture!

such a beautiful feast, this plate of tori amos records at my fingertips! certain songs on this most recent creation are so distinctly from her kitchen: barons of suburbia with the characteristic syncopated triplets of her Bosendorfer and Matt Chamberlain is, of course, the stock holding it all together. but she's spiced up various tracks with B3 Hammond organ, or the carlos santana-esque groove on sweet the sting, the gospel tendancies and lazy (not weak) vocals of witness, and That Bass Drum on martha's foolish ginger. not to mention the crazy pairing of bassy damian rice singing in unison with tori on the power of orange knickers: i think i'll actually go to the store today and buy some carrot-colored panties, i have been thusly moved in such varying degrees to believe in their clout. does this mean i won't get my writing assignment done in time for class this evening? or that i may "forget" to show up for class? um, no.

the beekeeper: it tastes so good--pull up a chair and bring your fork!

::temporarily out of service::

yep, the midterms are coming up. oh! and i've promised to write a short story for class in the next 5 weeks. that said, and with spring in the air and plenty of gardening to be done (not to mention "spring cleaning" 'round the house), i'm going to bid my readers farewell for the month of march. if the opportunity arises and i am thus inspired, i certainly intend to write. however, amidst the halfway point at school and looming responsibilities around the house, i feel the need to take some time off. see you soon!

::(insert title here)::

before leaving the house, i checked my email. in it, i learned that our uncle daryl passed away last night. once again, the numbness hits. as does the regret: too little, too late. there's just so little time here. and we get so busy, so caught up in our personal affairs, that we neglect to spend time with the ones we love. daryl was a wonderful man. and he loved our aunt laurie so much. she was truly the happiest i have seen her with him. i say that having only known her since the time i was ushered in to josh's family, which happened long before we were married. aunt laurie had less time with daryl than i have had with josh, which makes me cringe. what did i do to be so lucky? why do i deserve such kind treatment? honestly, it's life. i'm not in charge. i wish there was a way i could have extended their time together, though. again, they loved each other so much. i'm not in the frame of mind to delve in the "why's?" and the "it's not fair", not right now. no, not right now. but i'm at war with myself right now, not God. i wish i could go back in time. but again, it's not too late to start with the family and friends i still have in my life. and that's where i need to be, that's what i need to channel my energy into.

in unrelated news, i was late for work again today. i feel so stupid.

::lull::

it's shortly after 5 and i'm feeling like a lump. after last night on ai, i've kind of slumped around all day feeling sorry for myself, considering all the work i've done to make my site shine and be all "go judd!". i'm no expert when it comes to coding: more of a hack, really. so i cut and paste my template into notepad and toggle back and forth between blogger previews and lines upon lines of text. i really should get dreamweaver, josh says, but i guess i's just lazy.

so, american idol is in it's fourth season, and some folks said farewell to us last night. i'm furious about the way judd was let go at the end of the show. whatever the motive behind the producers' decision to cut the show in such a way as to lead us to believe that the bottom row of "boys" was safe, and then announce "judd, you're out" was unbelievably heartless. seacrest, you're not The Donald, so stop coming off like you're sending contestants "down to the street"! reality shows have certainly got out of hand, but america's watching and fox got their ratings, so the big wigs are coddled and that's what counts, right?

those feelings aside, one has to understand just how extraordinarily difficult it is to make it in the music industry. there are a ton of talented musicians out there and only a handful who successfully land a record deal. believe me, i've watched trespassers william struggle up the ladder for seven years now, and they're no where near household name status. on the other hand, they've got a record deal, anna-lynne sang on a track from the latest chemical brothers album, and the band has their own page in the itunes store! hel-LO! i have to say, IF anna-lynne auditioned for american idol, i don't think she would have made it as far as judd. saying that has absolutely nothing to do with her amount of talent, rather, the objective of a tv show and the "mainstream" tastes of americans (those who voted for ai). i digress....

in the words of peter gabriel, "don't give up".

::wha' happened?::

knowing the results already, and watching the show, is SO painful. these contestants really worked hard to make it as far as they did, and they should be proud! but singing once more, knowing that you've already been ousted from the finals, hearing the critiques, that is SO harsh! (and, thank you mr. brilliant-host-guy for just observing that same factoid on tv. humm...esp?)

so, 15 minutes to go, and if you're on the 'net you've probably looked for spoilers already. after this afternoon's remodel on the 'muse, and getting hopes up for weeks of promoting judd in all his excellence, my heart is just sinking to the floor. and, in the same line of thinking as those who still have bumper stickers on their cars toting the kerry/edwards duo, i'm not ready to shed my support for judd. i've never met you, but i feel like i know you. and you were classy and dignified up to the very last second. i'm proud of you!

i've added judd's nyc band to my "notable" list of links to the left. please visit, and if you live in new york, go see their next show!

::moment of truth::

it is obvious (if not to the faithful fans & friends, then to all of america who watches the show) that judd belongs in the top 10 that will remain tonight on AI. monday was truly my first peek at the energetic lad, and, quelle surprise! i honestly had no clue what i would be in store for as kidchamp had yet to hint at his musical style. my goodness! i see a lot of brian setzer in him/his performance, and of course i understand the comparisons to elvis presley. he performed with loads of enthusiasm, which is more than i can say for at least half of the contestants i watched on monday.

who do you think needs to be cut from the boys? anthony, constantine, jared, and scott.

who do do you think needs to be cut from the girls? not sure: i was in statistics from 7-10 last night, followed by some late-night grocery shopping at albertsons. and i didn't record it. hopefully i'll get a feel for their performances in tonight's show.

how do you feel about constantine? heaven wouldn't take him, hell doesn't need him, but he lives in new york city.

most questionable song choice?
honestly, anwar, with that beautiful hair and charming smile: moon river? you have no idea what bitter hatred i have for that mancini classic. i was tortured in my beginning voice class with several (poor) renditions of the tune. and, breakfast at tiffany's, mr. mancini, i'm still wondering: Why? to be fare, i don't think it was bad. josh actually enjoyed it.

who's the new marvin gaye? travis tucker! josh was totally charmed by your sexy smile.

who rocked? well, aside from judd, who not only rocked, but rolled as never seen before on AI.... i think i would have to give kudos to bo bice. josh wants him to make it to the next round just because of the way he dresses. if he makes it to the top 12, he'll probably earn an extreme makeover a la ABC or Queer Eye. however, the guy has a voice, and energy. we'll just have to wait and see.

well, unless kidchamp hints at it sooner, i'll be waiting on pins and needles and setting the vcr to record alias for a 10 o'clock viewing. hope you'll be joining me! go, Judd!

well the spoils are out... don't read the comments if you're on the west coast is all i can say!

::born free (writing)::

well, this weekend's sloth didn't just breed laziness and bedsores. i'm enjoying a lovely three day weekend (i love working for a bank!) and yesterday was thus inspired to compose (music). i sat down at the piano, though so dreadfully out-of-tune, and worked up a theme. and, rather than throw it away, like i do with so many other impromptu compositions, i dug out the manuscript paper, rustled up a mechanical pencil and eraser from my backpack (yup, it's the math this semester), and started scribbling away.

what a wonderful feeling! what an incredible sense of calm! i know this language which allows me to transcribe my spur-of-the-moment piddlings into something which will preserve the inspiration!!! holy cow! it's just like freewriting (or steam of consciousness writing), only requiring an extra step to translate the notes onto paper. i quickly realized how out of practice i was as i debated treble vs. bass clef, key and time signature. though it didn't take long, it certainly doesn't come naturally to me. i wish it would. i wish i didn't have to fight so hard with my notes and my pencil in order to put them on paper.

when you love something so much, as i love music, it can become one huge, impassioned road block. i'm hoping to continue on this path to recovery and become more well-adjusted to the process. but it all takes time. something which i can't seem to get enough of.

::judd harris for american idol::

well, there you have it: you know who i'm voting for! now you can show your support to the world by going here (incidently, the "vote for judd" logo is also a link.) if anyone has a more creative suggestion, i'm open. kidchamp asked me to join in the fray, so here i am.

what are you doing monday night? i'm watchin' american idol!

update: whilst i thought i was simply being cute, it looks like i may have to come up with some alternate artwork and cafepress has put the "vote for judd" merch on hold, pending approval. here's to hoping they'll be specific on what they don't like: i honestly don't know how Napoleon Dynamite could have a copyright on the whole "vote for..." thing, but i've a feeling it concerns the use of the name "American Idol". please stand by...

2.23.05 update: ok, the final word is this: i need permission from FOX to use the name of the show on a t-shirt. and i also need permission from judd (please make it to the next round!) to use his name/likeness on a t-shirt and provide such to cafepress.com. of course it's FOX that worries me the most, and i haven't even received one of those generic "we received your email..." emails from the request i sent them (who can i contact, etc.). so, things are on hold for now. i will definitely keep you updated on any major breakthroughs....

judd, if you read this, please forward me a photo i can crop and put on here instead of me linking to FOX's photo...it would just be a lot more kosher. please!

::around the sun::

R.E.M. continues to create new music these days which moves me to the core. they've come a long way since high school. no longer the band that's losing my religion, they're becoming more moody and heartfelt. high speed train is probably one of my new favorites. i'm in love with the "party shuffle" feature on iTunes because it allows me to explore my music collection to the deepest depths, unearthing tunes that i haven't listened to in ages and reminding me what excellent musical tastes i have. don't mind the fact that i'm still lounging in my pjs: it's Saturday! and a 3-day weekend. oh, yeah!

::go fly a kite!::

there were some interesting sights today at lunchtime. after eating my sandwich in my car, i was driving through several interconnecting parking lots on my way to rite aid for some mint chip ice cream. approaching big lots, i happened upon this scene: a woman, in her 40's, flying a kite. it is cold and windy. her back is to me and a small white dog is sitting at her feet, watching her. i slowly make my way around her, trying not to startle either of them. the dog is on a leash, but the woman doesn't have it tethered to anything. passing her, the kite nosedives into the pavement next to me. i try not to run it over. i think i am successul.

this is san juan capistrano. there is a park not half a mile away. but she's flying a kite in the middle of a parking lot. yeah. humm.

and, actually, this was the only interesting sight. sorry to disappoint ya.

::happy?::

ok, nothing wrong with valentine's day: i'm married, after all. my honey is built in and guaranteed on today and on all other days of the week/month/year. but i've had the flu for, let's say (rounding up...) a week now. and i'm not feeling a whole heckuva lot better. still, josh is bringing home a little sum-sum from P.F. Chang's tonight since i lack the energy to go OUT to dinner. providing the antibiotics don't induce a massive attack of stomach cramps, this will be a much welcomed change from soup and chamomile tea and juice and water and more soup. yeah, josh! i love you!

by the way, this picture was taken at The Standard Hotel a couple of weeks ago. This sticker was on every roll of toilet paper! i could hardly contain myself: i took a total of 4 shots, just for the sticker! perhaps this digital camera thing is getting out of hand???

happy (*cough, cough*) valentine's day, reader!

::sick of it all::

ok, i've sat on my butt all day long here.... another day home from work. i purchased updated virus protection for my computer and spent a good 2 hours downloading and restarting. oh, joy!

new york was wonderful & full of brilliance & overbearing insomnia (or was i still on west coast time?). but it also gave me the flu. did i mention it was well worth it? pictures coming soon... check FuriousFotos.

josh & i have decided to return this year, predicated on the "i must see spam-a-lot" mantra i've been carrying around in my head since we passed the shubert theatre. the website is brilliant, as is the cast, and i think we'll find last weekend's lovely hosts very willing to attend.

thusfar i have toyed with the idea of dropping my astronomy class, but josh reminded me the reason i started back with school in the first place. so, no matter how tedious the professor is, i'll stick with it. josh is awesome. and i really couldn't be successful in school without him. honestly.

::working for the weekend::

josh & i celebrated our third wedding anniversary by treating ourselves to a weekend at the standard in los angeles. saturday morning, we awoke to find a note slipped under our door.
Dear Hotel Guest,

Thank you for staying at The Standard!

We would like to inform you that there will be a movie shoot taking place near the hotel on Sunday, Jaunary 30th between the hours of 7:00am and 10:00pm. The shoot will not interfere with the operation of the hotel. However, we were told there will be sounds of gunfire and helicopters starting at 9:00am.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Laurent Fraticelli
General Manager
i felt giddy being in such close proximity with something as wonderful film making. however, it made josh horribly nervous and i pretty much fumbled with the camera non-stop. although the streets were absent of stars, we did see a lot of police as we attempted to make our way to the MOCA, only to learn it was closed! however, our good fortune and willing feet lead us to overhear a conversation which revealed a few of the main actors (ewan mcgregor & scarlett johansson). further research led me here to uncover the name of the film they are working on.

if only josh would have been a little slower to oblige the cops as we drove down grand, in the middle of where they were shooting, i might also be able to bring you pictures of the beautiful camera piggybacking the purple porsche cayenne. or the futuristic police car. or other furturistic looking cars. but, no, josh was forceably uninterested in loitering or causing a scene. and i'm proud of him: i wouldn't want to disturb a set, really. i couldn't readily roll out of the car while it was in motion anyhow.

::feeling guilty::

...for inadvertently writing this on my anniversary card to josh:
You know, I could be successful in school without you. Or life.
the correct word is couldn't.
he queried ever so gently, after a lengthy pause from repeatedly reading the words to himself, "what exactly do you mean by this?"
i was mortified when i realized my mistake. one has to have a sense of humor about these things.

::phantoms of sir lloyd webber's musical::

this review is long overdue, i'm well aware, so here goes. for those who don't know me, allow me to make privy to you some well-known facts. i have seen the phantom of the opera 5 times in los angeles. i saw it 4 times while it ran at the ahmanson theatre and once at the pantages. once with michael crawford, once with robert guillaume, and three times with davis gaines. i am a huge fan, even if i'm not as active in my pursuit of the Broadway Musical as i one was. josh caught me singing along to aspects of love last night because i was just, plainly, in the mood for a good musical. still, i should really take some singing lessons if i know what's good for me. and josh.

this review assumes that the reader is familiar with the story. if you aren't, read gaston leroux's the phantom of the opera and even susan kay's fanfic phantom. interestingly enough, this appears to be out of print: amazon is selling it for a pretty penny. and, for pete's sake, get some culture in your life! by any means possible!

Really Useful Films-- the moment this moniker flickers on screen someone in the audience snickers. this is when i stand up and yell "uh, DUH! if you knew ANYTHING about andrew lloyd webber and what this film (which has been in the talks for at least 15 years, if you ask ANYONE who knows ANYTHING) is about in the least you would KNOW that
The Really Useful Group (RUG) was founded in 1977 by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is an International entertainment company actively involved in theatre, film, television, video and concert productions, merchandising, magazine publishing, records and music publishing.
so, if you put two & two together, you MIGHT just be able to infer that Really Useful Films is part of the whole family of companies. why don't you just go HOME already? you make me SICK!" but the moment this happens in my head, i realize that i might get pummeled by her fake poodle purse or the smell of her cheap perfume, so i keep my mouth shut and don't actually say anything at all. amateurs, though. amateurs.

the film is beautiful overall. rich in color and warmth. as the chandelier rises in the opening scene, after the auction, the film unpeels from the grainy black & white film of "present day" paris to a full color version of the opera populaire in its heyday. drinking and debauchery seem to be a pastime of the poor, the stagehands, and the ballerinas (except for christine and meg, of course). the sounds feels better the second time around. as a musician, and very sensitive to scores and soundtracks, i found the first time around that the sound was less than sufficient. but i now know it was the theater. along the lines of music, i do have a couple of things to whine about. first, while minnie driver acted the part of carlotta better than i have ever seen it done before. still, why didn't they find someone who was able to sing the part as well? the voice-over was out of synch on several occasions, despite the effort to pan away from her during various songs. then they throw in a closing song that roles during the credits just to prove that ms. driver really knows how to sing. she just doesn't do opera. slackers & hackers, sheesh!

second, in the same vein, whoever revamped the orchestration on the title track made me ill with those random Casio keyboard brand hand claps. honestly, who thought of that? they should have to sit in a room for 24 hours listening to nothing but poorly executed, artificial hand claps. a number of real, live percussion instruments would have sufficed quite unobtrusively. also on the title song, i didn't quite get the part where the singing alternates between "i'm thinking and i'm singing" to "i'm really, actually singing!". one suspends belief as it is when taking in all that a musical offers in the first place. why add to the confusion of characters singing their lines?

third, there are random flashbacks which allow one scene to segue to another, seeming to allow for the passing of undisclosed amounts of time. they are consistently disruptive to the flow of the film and hardly serve a purpose to the telling of the tale. rather, they disrupt our thoughts and simply beg the question "why am i here?" -- their true purpose is mysterious. additionally, there were two other happenings which alarmed me, as a fan. first, the chandelier does not fall at the figurative end of act one. what? Excuse me? what's going on here? why did you change That? also, the decision for costuming during masquerade is questionable in my eyes. we hear:
Flash of mauve...
Splash of puce...
Fool and king...
Ghoul and goose...
Green and black...
Queen and priest...
Trace of rouge...
Face of beast...
we see: black. and white. and gold. save for raoul (in dark blue and gold) and christine (in pink). very confusing.

my favorite scene of the entire movie is when they sing "prima donna". everything leading up to that is perfect (the array of notes from OG, the moment when carlotta starts to walk out of the theatre and a patron says "would you please give this to ms. daae?", the song itself [everyone is brilliant, here. they shine like true, honest champs. i love it!], the was the scene melts from one room to the next as carlotta changes costume. pure brilliance!). yea! i actually was thrilled with this entire scene!

i've gotten long winded here, but gazing through my notes, i'll leave you with these queries which are still burning on my brain, in no particular order:
  • why does christine look like a porn star when she wakes up from the music of the night? i mean, that lingerie? the eye shadow? why wouldn't the phantom take advantage of her?
  • why are meg's boobs so big? i mean, she's a dancer, right?
  • what's with the midget?
  • why does the phantom play with dolls? that's just odd if you ask me. then he gets all angry-like and burns them. weird.
  • speaking lines that were once sung--who are you trying to fool? we ALL know it's a MUSICAL!
  • the dancers during "point of no return" must go. now.
  • what's up with the three random guys decked out in gold paint that have a split second on the screen when the phantom shows up during "masquerade"?
  • The Cape. seriously, did christopher walken come on set one day and shout "i've got a fever, and the only prescription is MORE CAPE FLINGING!"
there you have it. when all's said & done, i actually did enjoy the film, in spite of all my critcism.

::writing workshop::

has it really come to this? to prove to you, my reader, that i am indeed living and breathing despite long-winded silences, i will post my recent homework assignment, aka "be a reporter in your own home". i hope you enjoy it.

these days, i'm working really hard at my studies and keeping my precious schedule in balance. it involves making lots of lists and buying a dayrunner. yay, dayrunner! i am determined to be organized.

     Waiting to interview Ms. G_____, I'm perched on a chenille, olive green sofa and decidedly take inventory of my surroundings. Above the fireplace is a solitary picture of a French cafe, otherwise the white walls are bare. The handrails leading up the stairway are white. The wood-like blinds are white. The carpet is off-white, though not as pristine as it once was.

     Surveying the space, I notice an overflowing DVD collection shelved against the wall. A few titles catch my eye: Amelie, Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Star Wars, Zoolander. They are neurotically alphabetized.

     Breaking the pattern of white, a birch hue materializes in a single, broad shelf above the television piled with decorative scarlet red, yellow-green, and gold pillows. The TV is supported by a birch entertainment center, which is home to a myriad of accessories. Cables extend to and from the television like umbilical cords, giving life to the DVD player, a surround sound system, the Xbox and digital cable. Doth our writer suckle the boob-tube often? Methinks, yes. Alas, there are further pieces of this puzzle to explore.

     Resting on the mantle, and the bookshelf, and the coffee table, are knick-knacks hinting at our writer's personality. Various cat sculptures and photographs are scattered about, including one living, breathing, statue-like tabby that has been studying me since I walked in. The bright green eyes pop in contrast to the black & tan fur, eyeing me with casual curiosity or boredom. Sara is definitely a cat-lover. Scattered candles allude to a romantic side, especially the rustic, five-tiered candle holder which rests on the short wall behind the sofa. It creates the illusion of a separate room, and I'm sure it gives off a magnificent, warm glow when all five pillars are lit.

     What piques my interest most is her bookshelf. It seems the titles are as varied as her ambitions. A Sunset Western Garden Book echoes a curiosity for the outdoors that isn't yet reflected in her yard. Dictionaries are grouped according to subject: French, English, and Music, as are other like-minded texts, including 501 French Verbs, a thesaurus, and numerous biographies of Glenn Gould. Perusing other titles demonstrates her discriminating tastes. Authors range from Nick Bantok to Nick Hornby. There are the very serious works of fiction from Leo Tolstoy and the classics of Charles Dickens. Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera also storm the shelves. I wonder, is our writer is a fan of Broadway?

     One thing distinctly lacking is a collection of CDs. There is an upright piano in the adjacent room, and a nylon-stringed guitar propped up against the wall. Is it all for show? My thoughts are reprimanded as my gaze falls upon an iPod, charging atop the entertainment center. She must have an enormous assortment of music. What does she listen to? I hastily check the idea of satisfying my curiosity on the basis of respect, for at this very moment, she enters the room.

::in the background::

she's writing graduate school essays and i'm contemplating how ridiculous my statistics homework is. i spend hours calculating the mean, median, mode and midpoint of strings of up to 42 1-5 digit numbers (averages. i get it already. 42 numbers? that's what programs like excel are for, not me and a ten dollar calculator). i started this post thinking of comparing myself to my friends who i admire as writers (yes, you and you, of course), and even my "inner game of writing" teacher at uci. but then i want to slap my hormonal self in the face to snap out of the ridiculous notion that i've chosen the wrong profession. at least i was brave enough to share my free-writing piece with the class this past wednesday. some weren't. and it makes me hurt from their lack of confidence.

could it really be possible? think about it. could it really be possibly to write a perfect first draft? i mean, half the time i blog without barely a second read-through. if i do, it's days later and i blush at my misspellings and grammatical faux pas. chalk it up to artistic temper, or whatever. but it's me. and i've got a voice. and this whole process is about exploration.

"write what you like to read" mrs. demarco-barrett says in class. and suddenly, as intriguing as literary journalism sounds, how sweetly it rolls off the tongue, i realize that might not be what i want. magazine writing is somewhat appealing because of its nature: concise articles, limited word count, little time to bore the reader. but then i imagine what magazine out there is suitable for my tastes, and i realize i barely read my "real simple" subscription. i thumb through it to admire the textures and the layout, but other than that WHO HAS TIME? with the exception of being in the bathroom or at the salon (where i enjoy choice publications such as "people" or "us"), my schedule doesn't allow for such luxuries.

so, now what. i'm in flux. and flustered. did i mention hormonal? i'm a writer. i am a writer. that's what this blog is home to: my words. and i fully intend to use them. but now, what major to pursue exactly?

::missing::

for those livejournal users out there, without a voice, without a means to blog, i feel for you. though not really coherent enough to paste some meaningful drabble, and because josh won't wake up long enough for me to bake chocolate chip cookies, i bring you the lastest stats from the livejournal homepage. hang in there good folks, it'll come through in the end. i hope.
Our data center (Internap, the same one we've been at for many years) lost all its power, including redundant backup power, for some unknown reason. (unknown to us, at least) We're currently dealing with verifying the correct operation of our 100+ servers. Not fun. We're not happy about this.
Sorry... :-/ More details later.

Update #1, 7:35 pm PST: we have power again, and we're working to assess the state of the databases. The worst thing we could do right now is rush the site up in an unreliable state. We're checking all the hardware and data, making sure everything's consistent. Where it's not, we'll be restoring from recent backups and replaying all the changes since that time, to get to the current point in time, but in good shape. We'll be providing more technical details later, for those curious, on the power failure (when we learn more), the database details, and the recovery process. For now, please be patient. We'll be working all weekend on this if we have to.

Update #2, 10:11 pm: So far so good. Things are checking out, but we're being paranoid. A few annoying issues, but nothing that's not fixable. We're going to be buying a bunch of rack-mount UPS units on Monday so this doesn't happen again. In the past we've always trusted Internap's insanely redundant power and UPS systems, but now that this has happened to us twice, we realize the first time wasn't a total freak coincidence. C'est la vie.

Update #3: 2:42 am: We're starting to get tired, but all the hard stuff is done at least. Unfortunately a couple machines had lying hardware that didn't commit to disk when asked, so InnoDB's durability wasn't so durable (though no fault of InnoDB). We restored those machines from a recent backup and are replaying the binlogs (database changes) from the point of backup to present. That will take a couple hours to run. We'll also be replacing that hardware very shortly, or at least seeing if we can find/fix the reason it misbehaved. The four of us have been at this almost 12 hours, so we're going to take a bit of a break while the binlogs replay... Again, our apologies for the downtime. This has definitely been an experience.

Update #4: 9:12 am: We're back at it. We'll have the site up soon in some sort of crippled state while the clusters with the oldest backups continue to catch up.

Update #5: 1:58 pm: approaching 24 hours of downtime... *sigh* We're still at it. We'll be doing a full write-up when we're done, including what we'll be changing to make sure verify/restore operations don't take so long if this is ever necessary again. The good news is the databases already migrated to InnoDB did fine. The bad news (obviously) is that our verify/restore plan isn't fast enough. And also that some of our machine's storage subsystems lie. Anyway, we're still at it... it's long because we're making sure to back up even the partially out of sync databases that we're restoring, just in case we encounter any problems down the road with the restored copy, we'll be able to merge them. And unfortunately backups and networks are too slow.

Update #6: We're up again, but only partially. Some database clusters are still reconstructing/syncing. See status.livejournal.com.

do i subscribe to U2's website so that i can get priority ticket sales for the 2005 tour?

::good day, sunshine::

it is interesting to me what makes the news here in southern california. in light of the recent and ongoing tsunami tragedy, the news finds it necessary to cover the recent deluge and the path of destruction wrought on our land as though it was the most pressing topic on the table these days. it's sunny & cold right now, so hopefully residents in san juan capistrano will be given a reprieve. at least we have the tangible resources in our own backyard to cope with the weather.

more & more, as i bridge the gap from "writing for my own enjoyment" to the "wide world of journalism" i find there is this new area of my life which will require, pardon the expression, an extreme makeover. i am moving from the casual observer to the keen informer, complete with all my personal bias. and, in the future, i will have the philosophy of my future employer to consider. it's a daunting task, venturing from critical to critiqued. truly this promises to be a fascinating journey.

::amused::

i've been using amazon's marketplace to purchase my textbooks and occasionally run into a snafu here and there by purchasing the wrong edition. both times i've had to return a book, the seller has been pretty accomodating. however, my most recent transaction was interesting, to say the least.

first of all, when i recieved my textbook, it was PAPERBACK. secondly, it was the INTERNATIONAL version. uh HUM! so, needless to say, i made arrangements to return the book for a refund. funny thing is, i just got an email from the seller:
Sara,

I was wondering if you shipped the book.

Thank you,

Hamid
this to which i instantly dashed to the car for my delivery confirmation receipt. this to which i tracked my number online throught the us postal service. this to which i found that my package had, in fact, arrived TWO DAYS AGO. this to which i shot back, via email
Yes, I shipped the book. According to my delivery confirmation receipt, it arrived on January 5, 2005.

Delivery Confirmation receipt# 03022940000261142493

Did you receive it?

Sara
moments later, i received an email from amazon confirming the refund. now, honestly, why would you want to rip off a starving student? i couldn't believe this guy was seriously going to try and pull something like "uh, i never received the book, so i can't give you a refund." what a creep!

::so. much. time!::

my new part-time schedule is teaching me scary things about myself. today, for instance, went something like this:
...left work. felt energized. thought "let's give blood!" and drove to the nearest red cross. they relocated, so i called 1-800-give life. i go in on thursday. they were closed.
...went to mall. bought water filters for the fridge.
...wandered the mall. got thirsty. bought bottled water in the foodcourt. left the mall.
...called josh. called my sister. called christina.
...drove to another mall to exchange a pair of pants for josh.
...bought myself some gelato.
...found a jacket at macy's to replace the one i lost at emily's wedding.
...found dreamy, soft bathrobes for josh & me.
...bought aforementioned bathrobes.
...drove to josh's office.
...blogged.
so i really shopped more than i expected. shhh...! next week i will be in school. problem solved. yip.

::good morning::

indeed, this is what i felt like when i heard josh say to me this morning:
oh my gosh! bebe, it's 8:45!
at which point i grabbed the phone and called my work. i've no clue what happened to make both of us so extremely tired, but somehow we both overslept. thankfully, i made it to work safely and without much incident (ie. warnings or "you're fired!"). still, i was a nervous mess and failed to remember some of the bare essentials in my mad rush for the door.
and, sadly, that is the most eventful thing of the day. the christmas tree has been boxed up and i watched my toes spasm and curl up next to one another with some strange cramp, but really, it's just been an average day. for a monday.

::so long, 2004::

tonight, last minute plans (sort of) are taking me to the angela louise to ring in the new year. despite the pictures & music on the site, i have hope for a not so "girls-and-guys-gone-wild" night because our friend knows the owner of the boat. in addition a) it's raining, and b) josh doesn't do dancing. still, it should be a fun time.

this week rings in a number of other events, including my new part-time status at work, which i am thrilled about. mango is doing wonderfully, by the way, and has only thrown up once in the past week. *whew* i have also been blessed with friends in town and the past 4 nights have been very busy. junior-high pal, vicki, and her josh are visiting family out here. i was able to steal them away for an evening on monday for a date: movie, dinner, coffee. lauren and joe popped down from the glorious nyc for some misadventuring in the oc circa el rincon chilango. false hopes of "the new mexico city" led us to a restaurant with a walk-up order window and abundant seating beneath a sea of fluorescence in bright orange and green plastic booths. ew. so off to mi casa we headed (thank you, erin) for bottomless chips n'salsa and cheesy refried beans. oh, yum!

so, tonight, i hope everyone is with someone they love. let them know. don't be shy. life is way too short, as recent tragedies are teaching us. this year has taught me much about pursuing my dreams, my loves, my friends, my life, my faith. the transitions don't happen overnight, but truly this year has been a lesson in heartache for so many people i know (and don't). from close personal friends to those halfway across the globe, i feel my mortality on every side of me demanding to be lived and not ignored. christmas cards didn't get written, but that doesn't mean i don't love my friends. in lieu of, i've been working on a mix cd to encapsulate 2004 in song. it's a thowback to high school nostalgia, complete with the token cirque du soleil song (i think...) and i'm preparing it for the new year. if you'd like one and i don't know you, feel free to let me know by posting in the comments. we'll see how much time i have next week before the semester starts.

as the freeway signs in oc are boasting, i hope you will "designate before you celebrate". i love you all. cheers & blessings for a happy new year from my house to yours.

::a most wonderful time::

it's been difficult to write lately because of all the holiday gatherings and last week's misadventures with mango. i miss it terribly, but how much am i willing to bore my audience? i mean, honestly now? do you really want to hear why the prime rib got cold on christmas day? or how monty finally warmed up to josh's brother mike and sat on his lap (albeit hissing the instant mike tried to pet him)? or why my sister and i should have given my dad what he asked for (a knife sharpener) instead of what we thought he needed.

yeah, i thought so.

::what now?!::

ok, well, mango is feeling better, a fine chunk in my pocketbook later. and how doth he repay me? well, this evening i came home from work and there were no cats. high and low i searched. under beds and in cupboards. there was a putrid smell in the air upstairs and a starbucks bag minus one handle and some persimmons spilled on the ground downstairs. threads of what must have happened began weaving themselves in my head.
i finally found both cats in our second bedroom, barricaded between the bed and the wall. the air was foul-smelling where they had been holed up and one of them had peed on the carpet. i removed the handle from the starbucks bag that still hung around mango's neck and gently removed the frightened beasts from their hiding place. monty's tall puffed out as he starred down the hall wide-eyed. even with the clues left behind, i can't quite piece together everything that happened.

sadly, both cats, in peeing on themselves or on each other, did not lend themselves to any humanly affection. into the bath and crank up the heat and hope that mango will continue his no-vomit stretch here (we've passed the 24-hour mark! yeah!). i have to say, i'll take vomit over piss any day, as far as cleanup and odor are concerned. i now have reason number eighteen to buy new flooring: our upstairs is trashed after the whole ordeal.

::progress report::

after another trip to the vet for further testing, i am ecstatic to announce that mango is in recovery! yeah! more details to follow....

::nervous & exhausted::

my nerves are tweaked tonight & i can hardly bring myself to make a decent dinner. so far, i've had a cookie and some trader joe's brand pita chips with artichoke parmesan dip. yumm. all this to land me here at 7:00. sheesh.

last night i discovered that mango had yacked in quite nearly a dozen different places in our house. having two cats and freaking out on the whole "which one is puking?" question led me to drag both cats to the urgent care about this same time yesterday.

the urgent care is a fascinating and infuriating place all at once. i was greeted promptly upon arrival by one of the assistants who drew from me all pertinent information. then, i handed off mango to her care without question and went to fetch monty.

now, once they had the cats behind closed doors, i waited very nearly half an hour to speak with the dvm on duty. i learned of a bull dog who had tried to eat a bee and an entire side of her face swelled up. then, there was a dog with bloody broken nail who was waiting to be seen. and, there was a woman, about 45, with wavy, blonde hair. she came in, cradling her cat in a rust-colored towel, sat down and sniffled as she filled out the paperwork. i never learned what was wrong with her precious feline, but i felt her sadness hit me like a wave as i came to understand more of what my mom must have felt before she lost her precious cat last week.

i also heard a discussion take place as an owner was checking her pet into the hospital for treatment. i shuddered at questions like "do you want us to resuscitate your cat?" and "how hard to you want us to try?" though probably worded in a slightly more fashionable sense, the words still irritated and saddened me. in essence, there were different degrees of effort which could be put forth depending on how much you were willing to spend. i was glad it wasn't my conversation. i felt very strongly about wanting mango home with me.

so, needless to say, here i am 24 hours later. mango hasn't vomitted since about 12:30 this morning, and things seem to be on the up & up. i'm so proud of the li'l trooper!

oh! and, well, monty was his usual self and they couldn't really examine him, so i ended up just taking him home. thankfully, he has been simply right as rain. whew!

::who will it be?::

the compelling *new* weight-loss drama

after much deliberation, josh & i have decided the cats need to lose some of that extra poundage. as a sacrificial act of love & support, we have also joined a gym. we love our cats, and we want them to live long and healthy lives.
beginning on december 11, we began feeding both cats science diet r/d. we will chronicle their progress below & hope you will be duly entertained and educated.

december 6 weigh in
mango: 15.6 lbs
monty: 18.8 lbs

neither cat seems very fond of the cat food. i feel bad for having to switch them so abruptly from the tasty trader joe's brand to science diet. the canned food looks a bit, er, lifeless and grey. however, subsequent can openings reassure me that's normal.
p.s. sara went to the gym. once.

december 13 weigh in
mango: 15.2 lbs
monty: 18.6 lbs

ah, small progress! josh notes that both cats seem well-adjusted to the food. however, mango often leaves canned food behind half-eaten and monty will clean up BOTH dishes. josh predicts monty will gain 4/10ths. we'll have to wait and see.

december 20 weigh in
mango: 15.4 lbs
monty: 18.8 lbs

yep, well, the weight gain thing? you know i can't really explain it...

december 28 weigh in
mango: 14.4 lbs
monty: 18 lbs

well, perhaps a little more weight than i would like to see them lose in one week, however, i've really had to limit their food intake because mango was so sick last week. i'm not able to leave dry food out for them to freely graze on because i haven't been able to work mango up to that point yet (poor guy can't seem to stomach it very well). that said, mango is quickly getting back to normal and monty is acting his usual "loner" self. ah, cats!

january 3 weigh in
mango: 14.8 lbs
monty: 18.2 lbs

well, i'm still searching for the perfect formula here, but it's obvious to me that more control & less "free feeding" is in order. both cats are healthy though, which brings me great relief. i haven't quite figured out what their target weight should be, and i did weigh them in the evening this time, so there may be some small differences. that said--mango just peed! should i weigh him again??? (there was no noticeable change. but he is headed back to the litter box again at this point. man, i just cleaned it!)

january 10 weigh in
mango: 14.6 lbs
monty: 18 lbs

so, with a little more control on their feeding, it looks as though they can be sucessful. does anyone know what the best way is to figure out how many ounces six-thenths of a pound is? i think if i multiply 0.6 x 16 (the # of pounds in an ounce) = the correct conversion. but i'm not sure. if that's right, then mango weighs 14 pounds 9 ounces. and this goes better with how they measure weight at the vet's office. let me know!

january 17 weigh in
mango: 14.8 lbs
monty: 17.8 lbs

insert thoughtful commentary here

january 25 weigh in

mango: 14.8 lbs
monty: 17.8 lbs

wow: they are actually maintaining their weight! woah! so far, monty is the biggest loser, having dropped a full pound. mango is right behind him though....

february 15 update

scheduling conflicts have resulted in my slacking off the past couple of weeks, but i will resume weigh-ins on the 18th.

february 18 weigh in

mango: 14.8 lbs
monty: 17.6 lbs

it's actually very exciting to know that my "kids" are being successful with this. poor monty actually had to go in for a dental cleaning (his first) on monday. i felt so bad leaving him with the vet: it's just so dang upsetting for him. but he did fine. one of the technicians commented on how nice it was to pet him for a change (they had to knock him out for the procedure). that was pretty funny.
mango has been his normal, weird self. he tears up and down the stairs after breakfast most of the time, and i really think that's what keeps him so slim.
at this point, i'm not sure how long to keep this going. there have been some requests (ok, will, one) to pimp "judd for american idol", so i might have to update my sidebar. still scheming on that one though....

::awful holiday confession #7::

um, er, i actually planned on doing one of these for each day in december, however, circumstances convinced me otherwise. so here i am in the wee hours having just completed my psych final online (twice!) and not really caring about my score but pretty darn sure i'll end up passing the class. i slacked on one of the observations, but i'm lacking the motivation to pursue any sort of retroactive credit. the online class format sucks and i'm never doing one again. in addition, post-speech class discussions with ms. jessica led to the discovery that the teacher plagiarizes her test from the publishers' website, so i cry foul. it's darned lazy if you ask me.

in other news, tomorrow is my last class. also, my previously planned schedule has flip-flopped a bit as i plan on dropping postponing japanese and anthropology in order to pursue a writing course through the uci extensions program. with all this extra time on my hands as i hope uci grants me asylum from my tedious general ed studies in the winter of 2006, i've decided to make the best of the next year. i was also considering this course, so if you have any constructive input, bring it.

it's 12:51 a.m. now. really. must. sleep....

::awful holiday confession #5::

we have a fake christmas tree. last year, josh & i decided, while standing in the parking lot of home depot freezing our butts off at nine o'clock at night, that enough was enough.
happily, we decked the halls on november 28. it was virtually painless and the tree came with its own lighting. imagine that!

::awful holiday confession #4::

i actually love christmas music. even the muzak that they play at work. i get all choked up when i hear a favorite piece and it makes my day a million times better.

i'm currently listening to the chieftains: the bells of dublinicon. yummy!

::awful holiday confession #3::

today's lethal combination of sudafed and tylenol and caffeine has me flying through the workday. i do believe if we weren't as busy as we are, i'd be bald from tearing at my hair and my fingernails would be chewed down to the nubbins. i can only imagine what it's like to be on speed.

oh, how i detest winter colds & congestion!

::music pick of the week::

112304_HowToDismantle
the boys of rock n' roll, indeed! this album rocked my vacation, let me tell you. and then some. poignant lyrics and song writing that harkens back to the days of yore. how beautiful they have matured over the years. and now, like a fine wine, perfectly aged, oh how delicately the notes sit on my tongue. a first hint of the flavor combines bits of all that you can't leave behind with joshua tree...but continues back into the early eighties as well.

clever marketing coupled U2 with iPod and there was a point at which i thought i might never want to hear vertigo again, however, that moment of temporary insanity has passed. this album is a sign that, unlike some aging pop stars (uhhum, sting?) the fire has not gone out of their souls. U2 still writes incredible songs. original of the species is the first time i have heard them hint at the beatles with the ascending minor chords and percussive strings. one step closer has a rich, vibey, pedal steel part that just makes me melt. as i found myself out of sorts somewhat last week, sometimes you can't make it on your own provided much needed comfort. music is a wonderful way to get one's mind off of one's troubles. or homesickness.

i do hope you will enjoy it as much as i do!

::B L O G::

for a medium that has existed since the previous millenium, it sure took them long enough.

but, ah well, let's celebrate!

::awful holiday confession#2::

i cry when i watch elf. i cried last year when it was in theaters. i cried when i saw it last week (both times). it's always at the finale, when everyone is singing "santa claus is coming to town".

i really can't explain....

::awful holiday confession #1::

i'm actually watching nick & jessica's family christmas. yes, and i do believe i have a case of the warm fuzzies. or maybe i'm coming down with something.

in the meantime, i'm thinking:
how does ashley simpson really feel about singing with her big sis?

why do i fall for this sappy stuff? (i'm such a sucker for this time of year...)

nick lachey can sing!

i still find jessica simpson's facial expressions (while singing) nightmarish, yet, strangely facinating.

that whole tongue-stuck-to-the-pole routine was just about as ridiculous as i could stand it to be.

is it true?! oh, martha, for shame!
