yeah! it's leigh!

i'm oh-so-thankful i signed up to be on sixpence none the richer's email list back when they were a band. though i never had the opportunity to see them in concert, being part of their mailing list resulted in an email with a link to leigh nash's myspace site and a sampling of some of her new songs. there's a beautiful maturity going on here, and i'll happily await her album. just thought i'd share the link in case there are like-minded readers out there. her songs border on the more pop-type style, but she can do some really unusual things with chord changes that cause her to stand out above the usual chump-pop that's out there. hopefully there's some of that in the works on her up-and-coming album.

number 43

i have begun the photo log here, and i will do my very best not to bore you with too many pictures of my cats.

in other news, i'm still awaiting 9 recommended books (#31) and 10 films (#38) from my readers here on the 'muse. i know there are people out there reading this blog, so humor me why don't you.

thus far i'm really excited about my list of 101 in 1001 and definitely look forward to writing more. school just started last week and i'm awaiting the results of my application to uci on pins and needles. yea!

number 51 and 26

from 101 in 1001: sponsor a child through world vision
Congratulations! You have sponsored Xhenisa from Albania

Born: Mar 05, 1998
Grade: 1
Favorite Subject: Reading
Health: Good
Favorite Play: Toys
Gender: Girl
Chores: Too Young
Country: Albania

Xhenisa lives with her parents and 1 sister. Her parents struggle to provide for the family.

Xhenisa is growing up in the mountainous country of Albania. The village is very rural and poor. Their single floor homes are constructed of stones and sometimes logs or sticks, with mud for mortar. Farmers grow citrus fruit and vegetables. Bread and dairy products are also staple foods. This is a beautiful country with forests, mountains and lakes. Summers are hot and dry but the winters are cold.

Xhenisa is in primary school and she enjoys reading. She helps at home by learning to do small tasks. She likes to play with toys. She is in good health.

Your sponsorship commitment will help provide Xhenisa and her community with clean water and improved healthcare facilities. Your support will help your child receive a quality education. Farmers will learn to grow more food for their families. Community leaders will learn management and development skills. We are thankful for your commitment and your prayers so these precious children and their families are able to experience the love of God and life in all its fullness.

my former roommate kim does this and i always thought it was a great idea. the monthly donation for an indefinite period of time was a little scary to me, but i try to remind myself how fortunate i am to have as much as i do. i could stand to live with a little less "stuff". and considering #26 (save $5/day for the next 1001 days) i can't help but notice that i'll essentially have at least 4 times as much in my own pocket at the end of all this. ah, the irony of my struggles!

weird things

i've had a lot of weird things happen at my teller window, but today was the kicker.

a woman began flossing as i processed her transaction.

let's just think on this for a while, shall we?

how long should it be?

well, amidst the pressures of composing 101 things to do in 1001 days, i happened across this site as i was looking for guidance with the 10 short stories i've proposed writing. i've never thought about how long a piece needs to be, apart from assignments i've been given. but here i am, looking for answers. though this website has an awful pink hue remeniscent of pepto bismol, i think there's probably a little here and there to be gleaned from it.

irvine, we have ignition

it's a slow-burn, the admissions process. namely the act of writing about myself in order to convince an unknown person that i am acceptable. two essays were written, trashed, and re-written about three times. i want to cry because:
--i love safari. it's the browser that cuts through apparent traffic jams that explorer and mozilla can't penetrate. i was trying to submit my application online and IE was completely deadlocked.

--my two great friends, erin & lauren, helped me cut to the chase on my essays and their hugely in-depth comments brought focus to my compositions. so what if my last "open-ended" essay capped at 133 words! i had nightmares about this. i kept editing myself so that i wouldn't be disqualified for missing the "about 200 words" mark so broadly

--i love my iBook. i carted it with me everywhere in my bulky new messenger bag. i sought refuge in bookstores and cafes and it did me good.

--coldplay sang "till kingdom come" through my iPod earbuds as the moment came to a close

--i haven't slept for nearly 21 hours

--josh. just, josh. he rocks.
it is finished. will update you with glorious news or the brutal truth in 3-4 weeks. there was a request to see my final essays tonight at dinner, but i haven't decided whether they belong here or not. would it invite plagiarism? i'm proud of my work, but i sure hope not. publishing it on the 'muse is still up for debate.

must.
sleep.

fly now, butterfly

it's absolutely unavoidable. wednesday is the day my uc application must be complete. and i'm reading and rereading my essays and trying to work out the best possible composition. as i'm doing this, i'm feeling incredibly inadequate. i'm trying to put my best foot forward, and i continually second-guess my abilities.

i'll be hitting my favorite cafe tonight for inspiration. yeah!

ready, set, write!

not only do i have a weekend chock-full of essays and writing assignments to be completed, but i promise to continue ignoring the gardening in order to do so. though i have high hopes of having a green thumb one day, the pepper tree that's been planted by The Association on the corner sheds worse than my long-haired cat, requiring the discipline of someone who's willing to sweep once a week to avoid the patio looking like a long-abandoned forest floor. i'm willing, but unable to oblige with other commitments taking precedence. my ficus has been hearty enough to endure periods of neglect, but i'm not so sure about our bamboo plant. several leaves have browned and my generous serving of water may not do the trick.

my sister is in town for the weekend so she can attend a cookie lee convention. as i opened up the door last night to usher her in, i became distracted by the hundreds of ants swarming around my door frame and didn't really get around to hugging her for about a half an hour. her timing was fortunate for us, because how often does anyone examine their doors when they aren't expecting guests? also fortunate is the nearby grocery store which supplied us with ant spray and that i still had some terro ant bait on hand.

i hate ants with a passion unlike any other vile, abhorrent thing on this earth. well, almost.

the joys of parenting

well, as luck would have it, monty appears to have an upper respiratory infection ($) and our trip to the vet last night produced a bill and some medication ($). last night i was awoken to the sound of moxie throwing up ($). gotta hand it to that kitten, he picked a very cleanable, rinsable place to do his business. as opposed to, say, upchucking under the bed. after breakfast this morning, mango threw up by the litter box ($). so i've called the vet and she'll call me back. chances are, all cats have the same virus ($)($)($).

i'm so glad i adopted another cat!

ed. note: dr. mckee wants to wait a little bit for more symptoms to show themselves rather than needlessly medicating them. good for her. (-$$)

meme

this one came to me via email from vicki, but i've decided it piqued my interest enough that it should go here as well.

Instructions: Go to Google and type in "(your name) is", inserting your name in the parantheses, and try to pick the 10 most interesting sentences to respond with.

i went for broke with an even dozen:
1. Sara is one of those girls who stand out in whatever they do, ...

2. SARA is used to control the spread of Macro viruses.

3. Sara is extremely shy. She used to be afraid of everything, people, cats, dogs, firehydrants, the wind, mailboxes, poles, tree branches, motorcycles, bikes, ...

4. Sara is an affectionate, cuddly girl who has a lot of love to share. ...

6. SARA is a subtle condition in most high-producing dairy herds.

7. SARA is located on 380 acres, which also serves as a refuge for wildlife.

8. Watch out Barbie! Sara is coming ...

9. But Sara is nonetheless the most pampered pupil in the school.

10. Sara is a forecaster, who sets benchmarks and clearly-definable goals;

11. SARA is being run from an untrusted host.

12. Sara is very pleased to be 32.
this site does something similar, but the manual procedures are infinitely more satisfying.

boo-hoo

monty's been rather hoarse the past few days, a little lethargic, and had a brief coughing spell/asthma attack last night which leads me yet again to the vet's office (dr. mckee at moulton animal hospital is amazing. monty can be a pain in the a__.) anytime one of my cats is sick i start thinking of worst case scenarios. it's a sort of mental illness i think. just like when i picture myself dodging bullets matrix-style as i enter the vault at work and hurry to shut the metal door behind me should our bank ever been overtaken by robbers (have you seen heat? ohmegee!). needless to say i'm horrified at the potential diagnosis, the stress of the trip on my senior cat (he's seven), and whether or not he will pee on the doctor's examining table as they attempt to muzzle him.

jeers

...to the boys who woke me up at 2:30 in the morning running around by our house and talking loud enough to wake me from my slumbers. i chastized them from my window (though i mistook a plant for a boy because i was without my glasses) "what are you doing out there? you need to go home. it's late." but i never did fall asleep properly after that and my eyes are fuzzy and squinty today, with patches of pinkish-red to boot. as i pulled out from the garage this morning, however, i discovered that a house across the way had been toilet-papered something fierce. boys!

a la carte

i'm sure most or all writers understand the difficulties of motivation. procrastination is a childhood pal of mine i would like to kick to the curb. most of the time my delays are coupled with an inability to get started on a project. the project that most concerns me is that of my admissions essays. and i'm home right now (as opposed to hanging out with josh, who has a gig tonight) with the promise of working on my essays. there are so many distractions: the constant barrage of ants, a new kitty to care for, endless miles of housework. my body is sore from lack of movement and my eyes are tired for straining at the computer monitor. i could use a workout at the gym, but a promise is a promise. the essays are waiting and i just polished off a bag of fresh-boiled soybeans.

crap

our bank was robbed yesterday. i'm relieved it was my day off, but i am sad for ann. ann!!! ergh. stupid bank robber....

doltish customer comment: did you guys close early yesterday?
me: no. we were robbed.
dcc: oh, yeah. i knew that.
yeah, and you're just a loser for trying to make a joke out of it!

later (same customer)...
me: may i see your i.d. for the cash back?
dcc: i've got my wife's i.d.!
me: you don't look like a "beverly"...
dcc: yeah. i lost her a while back.
me: (feeling like a complete real idiot) i'm sorry to hear that.
yeah, who's the loser now?

p.s. i just helped a woman and it was nearly "nipplegate" all over again. gimme a friggin' break! it's a BANK, not a BEACH!

let's fighting love (south park)

or, let's go to our ten year high school reunion. let's show up, with our army of friends, and just see what materializes.
game?
yep. and i'm a little insane because of the price (about $70/ticket). but my friends will be there, and we can look around the room and see if anyone's changed, reminisce about our teenage escapades, and eat chicken piccata with veggies, a dinner roll, salad, and old desert paired with lukewarm coffee. i hope i'm not romanticizing it too much.

how much?

oh, dear reader, why doth thy futile searches bring thee to my door? the 'muse does not care "how much does jessica simpson weigh", and yet that's exactly what 77 readers tried to find out in the past 30 days when they ended up here. well, i'm sorry to disappoint, but i am thankful for the laugh.

other search terms that made me laugh this morning:

  • scarlet johansson boobs
  • why are californians rude
  • push ups give me a headache
  • fedex truck spoon
  • talk to me anytime

moxie

well, thank you, dear reader, for your suggestions. however, lacking in leisurely lengths of time for a proper "name the kitten" contest, josh & i decided this morning on moxie. this definition from wikipedia is extremely apt:
Moxie, a carbonated beverage, is considered to be the USA's first mass produced soft drink. Created in 1884 in Lowell, Massachusetts by Dr. Augustin Thompson, Moxie was marketed under the product name "Moxie Nerve Food" and originally sold as a "cure all" medicine (snake oil). Later in the 20th century, it was sold in carbonated form and merchandised as an invigorating drink, which claimed to endow the drinker with "spunk."
so there you have it. tomorrow he goes in for an exam, some shots, and a much-needed deworming. huzzah!

among all that was lacking yesterday is last night's fair helping of sleep. i have to be at work in an hour and am no where near awake since the insomnia hit me around ten o'clock (a typical bedtime on a work day). apparently i've overdone my sleep rations somewhere in the universe and so it was determined that i should not sleep last night except fitfully betwixt unruly cats, unusually warm night air, and a mind that wouldn't stop running around, going on and on about what needs to be done around the house, and wondering about getting a service out here to spray for ants.

appart from that, erin is on her way to austin right now, and i'm feeling inexplicably exhuasted. oh, wait, that's because i didn't sleep last night. well, i suppose i'd better hop to it and go to work.

we're going to look at kittens today!

::there is no spoon::

...and other things lacking presently include:
  • adrienne's grandfather's cat is NOT pregnant
  • tact from the first customer of the day who whined in front of his teenage daughter about having to show id in order to cash some checks
  • my concentration--i spent the morning reading harry potter and have less than fifty pages to go
  • food in my tummy. see above.
  • another cat in my life. hummm.

::three-year itch::

i'm in love. maybe he'll have me. i can only hope. please stand by.

ok, so mr. harley is a bit of a lump & my friend adrienne's grandfather has a cat that's going to have kittens, so i'll probably end up helping out with that. they should be born in the beginning of august and i'll be helping out with the adoption process (ie putting pix on craigslist and getting them spayed/neutered in advance). should be fun.

my gosh, though, i have no idea what i'm in for, do i? how exciting! in the meantime, anyone have advice on kittens: useful websites/texts? let me know in the comments box!

::club four hundred::

ah, anniversaries galore for the month of july. today is post #400, but i won't promise interesting stories. this morning calls for lists. or stream-of-consciousness.

stay tuned for the three-year celebration on july 30th.

this morning has been fun. fed the cats and discovered armies of ants marching back and forth on my kitchen counter. they were going in-and-out of the misplaced bag containing the leftover biscuit from the k-k-kfc-i-a. i think the absence of ants leads one to unfortunate and untimely forgetfulness, even though i've been feeding the cats in various locations throughout the house in order to deter or confuse the little buggers. well, at least i can say i've managed to store the angel food cake in the fridge. now that would have been messy!

the funny thing is (do you really need me to tell you the funny thing?), that, as i was filling the sink with super-sudsy-soapy water i imagined the ants covering bjork's "army of me". specifically the part where she sings "and if you complain / once more / you'll meet an army of me" because there i was, staring in awe and loathing at the hundreds of ants piling in and out of the bag that contained a single, crusty biscuit. MY BISCUIT! and then you think, that biscuit, how it must've felt. and you want to run around and scream "my biscuits are burning!" because surely that's how it would feel. if you were being nibbled away by an army of ants. it would feel like you were on fire. but me, all i did was yell and holler at the ants and i grabbed the small, greasy brown bag and lifted it gingerly and swiftly from the counter and dumped it into the sink, writhing with ants who would soon meet their doom in the dish-soapy water.

since seven forty-five this morning, since the above events, my skin has been twitching from phantom ants which i imagine to be crawling on my arms, hands, and legs. everytime i look, there's nothing there. but i feel them. and i think i deserve a hot, soapy bath. thankfully, though, it won't kill me. but it just might inspire some housework.

hope your day is going better. i'll leave you with this gorgeous picture of my cat, monty. en guarde, chuck & jude!

::i *heart* beck::

seeing beck at the gibson (universal) amphitheatre...leaves me clamoring for words. i enjoyed the show to the nth degree, from start to finish. though my personal highlight was his acoustic rendition of "everybody's gotta learn sometimes". just his sweet vocals and a guitar gave me chills. i especially loved his twist on the melody. trust me, it was just a breath-stopping moment. the only disappointment was the lack of merchandise...specifically the booths that ran out of a black t-shirt with a boom-box on it which read "my beat is correct" which IS NOT FOR SALE at the website. if you have any idea where i can get my hot little hands on this piece of precious merch, drop me a line in the comments box.

the openers were fun. the tv sheriff was over-the-top-hilarious. the video ape...well, if you're up for watching it, i know it will speak for itself. it's possible you might need to be in a certain mood to tolerate it's shiny, blurry, ridiculous adventuring into the wonderment of modern video mixing technology. if you've always wondered about treet (aka spam) this will explain it all.

in addition, i am newly christened a fan of the decemberists because of their performance. there's something romantic about their story-telling and songwriting. beautiful modal harmonies and various instruments you don't see on stage as often as you used to: violin, upright bass, accordian. it was pretty magical and i became an instant devotee, nearly prepared to slap the boys who stormed the the row behind us during their last song (the mariner's revenge song) and exclaimed "what is this? simon & garfunkel?" in the words of napoleon dynamite, "idiot!"

in the end, beck was amazing. his bandmates are fantastic, talented, and an overall fun group of guys. i wouldn't miss a chance to see them in the future. and, if there is ever a dvd of the concert, i would totally buy it.

::it's HOT::

i'm literally sweating out my UCI application this afternoon. it's 84o in the house right now and i'm so stubborn about putting on the air conditioning. i'd rather walk aroud the house in a bathing suit. my argument for conserving energy also involves NOT vaccuuming and NOT doing any laundry. it's too hot to move, so i'll just sit in this chair, stare at the computer, and sweat it out. maybe i'll feel like working in a little while. or maybe i'll actually go to the gym. they do have air conditioning there. half an hour more...i ate a big, late lunch.

i've finished the most painstaking and time-consuming task of entering my transcript history into uci's online application. i do appreciate the convenience of it all, but the process once again reminded me of all those years i lacked committement to school. chalk it up to immaturity. i've got 219 units attempted (!) and 71 completed with a 2.9 GPA. i do have one permanent "f" on my transcript which is just about killing me, but the only way i'll end up retaking harmony 3 (music theory) is if something changes with my work hours. or if i take it at uci. but i can't imagine a better theory teacher than saddleback college's own norm weston, so i'll let it be for the time being.

now it's time to work on my essays. i'm not even going to look at the drafts i started in november. i need to be in the "now". but first, a taste of air conditioning for the sweltering soul: i'm going to the gym!

Monday, July 18, 2005

::take two::

today officially begins my quest for admissions to uci. i realize i've been rather absent the past week. unintentional, i promise. life has been happening in an all-consuming sort of way between various obligations and work and visiting with friends and family. i'm up without an alarm today (though i suppose my cat mango fearlessly batting at the blinds in order that he might be fed breakfast is alarming enough).

it's twenty minutes before seven and the house is relatively quiet. i've fed the kids and settled on the couch to blog and write. and now comes the writing....

::weight a minute now::

whilst i'm unable to explain how particular people end up at the 'muse, i'm fascinated at being able to unveil the mystery of where some of my readership stems from. i'm happy to discover that i have received about over 500 sessions (in layman's terms, hits, but josh explained to me that the term "hits" includes multiple bits of information being pulled from the server, ie. style sheets, css, images, links, etc.) so far for the month of july. my amusement, however, stems from the search terms that end up bringing in a reader. phrases like:
  • cleanup of feline vomit
  • mean,median, mode in a song
  • how much does jessica simpson weigh now?
  • jessica simpson's tongue

i'm concerned with the obsession the public seems to have with weight, not that i don't contemplate it myself at times. but my queries would run something like "jessica simpson's abs and how i can get them". short of weird science experiments, i know that the answer is hardly going to be discovered on my blog. let alone the fact that i'm hacking away at the keyboard; the answer is "go to the gym", my friends, and i'll leave it at that. i haven't been since last saturday and in a week's time there will be one open within walking distance from my house, so i'll get me some abs like that by the end of the summer, i promise.

in other news, i just finished hemingway's a moveable feast and, being somewhat ignorant of the author's life history, continued reading the brief biography on the few remaining pages. when i learned of his suicide, it hit me as though i just lost a close friend to tragic circumstances. hemingway is so honest in his text, which catalogues the time spent in paris in the 1920's with other writers such as f. scott fitzgerald (who finished the great gatsby during this time) and t.s. eliot, among others. regardless of any fictional events that may have been injected into this memoir of his, hem is fabulously brilliant. he is full of realisms for the writer to adapt into their own way of being. my favorite two quotes, though i fully intended to go through the book a second time & highlight other wonderful insights, are:

All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence you know.

--and--

I knew I must write a novel. But it seemed an impossible thing to do when I had been trying with great difficulty to write paragraphs that would be a distillation of what made a novel. It was necessary to write longer stories now as you would train for a longer race.
oh, hem, such wisdom! i'm starting to think that my one-dollar composition books and hoard of delicately decorated journals ought to be shed for the simplicity of a moleskine based on superstitious hopes of brilliance via some inherent osmosis(hemingway used a moleskine notebook for his writings).

::newsflash::

er, uci's summer admissions submission has been moved to july 18 - august18, so my saga has been temporarily delayed. the happy news though, is that my major is not closed. it will be:
english with an emphases in creative writing
with a minor in literary journalism
phew!

also, i've finally documented the recent los angeles photo-shooting drive-by i took with erin the other weekend. you can check it out here.

::movie meme::

yes, kidchamp, i haven't forgotten...

number of films i see in a year: gee, i dunno, maybe 30? does this include watching movies you own over and over? i really don't get to the cinema quite as often as i'd like to.

last film i rented / saw at home: love me if you dare happened to be on IFC or Bravo recently and i was simply awestruck.

last film i saw at a theater: bewitched. a fun romp with nicole kidman and will ferrell and shirley maclaine and michael caine. very lighthearted, and just what i needed at the time.

last film i saw and hated: ...apparently wasn't even worthy of remembering the title. and, hate is such a strong word.

film i know i should see: trois couleurs: blue. of course i should see the entire set, but the last time i tried to watch it i found myself incredibly depressed, despite its beauty.

3 films i love:
le fabuleux destin d'amelie poulain. it leaves me speechless to bask in yann tiersen's scoring of a film so rich in colors and textures, with brilliant writing and cast to boot. je t'aime, amelie.

the lion king. i didn't promise not to be juvenile! i have always had a special place in my heart for my most favorite of all disney animated films. elton john's (music is such a key element for me) songwriting is so full of life! i still tear up when mufasa dies....

the lord of the rings. epic. this trilogy moved me. then i went to new zealand and was moved even more by the beauty of the place. again, howard shore's scoring was dramatic and fitting. and it would be difficult to come up with a theme that could support a film as enormous as this one is.

3 unsuspecting baton recipients: anyone? anyone? bueller?

::favorite things::

just recently i've been blessed with the ability to sort through my site stats and dig through my referrals from various search engines. in no particular order, my recent favorites are:
  1. "barbie and the rockers" + cassette
  2. cheesecake factory offer oregon
  3. where can i get music that will play the whole song with words for neopets?
  4. how much does ashley judd weigh
  5. cool volkswagon backgrounds
  6. if it was 5:53 pm here what time would it be in london england.
  7. percent of speeding tickets brought to trail
  8. who did brian setzer marry in may 2005
  9. "proof that aliens exist" e
  10. assemble dot patio furniture

most of these things i know nothing about, yet you came here anyway. maybe, just maybe, you've forgiven me for not answering your query properly. except for the person who ended up here after googling "tori amos sans panties". they are still deeply, deeply disappointed.

my awful confession: i've been looking up the search terms that are obviously misspelled and correcting them!

::sim::

i'm painfully hooked on the sims thanks to last week's visitors. though i find myself persistently frustrated in stage three of the game, where my sim "jean" is rooming with "mimi", a lazy slob who brings in a wussy $110/day (actually not that bad for real-life standards, however, since sims work 7 days/week and bills come in the mail every few days for around $1000, it's pretty much pocket change). not only is "mimi" a free-loader worthy of jerry springer, she only cooks on the grill (can't blame her for that--i love my bbq), and frequently throws her food on the floor instead of in the trash. this morning she started a fire on the grill which burned our beverage cooler into ashes and "jean" arrived home from work just in time to catch all this. of course this results in complete panic as both sims hop around frantically and their little thought bubbles with pictures of fire hop right along with them as they wave their arms in panic. it's actually funny, but not at all realistic because the only possible response for "mimi" is calling the fire department. there is no hose in the yard and you can only wash your hands in the sink (as opposed to, say, filling a bucket with water--but we don't have those either). what a predicament!

so, if you're not familiar with the game, there are some key quality of living things that need to be cared for. the ones i will focus on (and my gripe about the game) are: hunger, bladder, social, and fun. your job, as the player of this game, is to insure that all these aspects of your subject's well-being are "in the green". as time wears on, an indicator bar will gradually become more red and then you have to make your sim do something to take care of this. when "jean" goes to work from 9-3, I have noticed that things pretty much don't change, which concerns me. it would appear that she doesn't get a lunch break, is not allowed to use the bathroom, and can't enjoy herself the least bit since she doesn't socialize with her coworkers or have any fun while at work. i wonder who to file a complaint with? after all, if i don't get "jean" to the toilet in time, she'll pee her pants and start crying. and that just isn't pretty.

the first of july...and here i am (it's about time). my day may have started with a leisurely wake-up call at eight, but i'm on a mission and it's time for extreme action. day one of the uc application process. lucky me has the entire month to report on the agony and the accomplishment of it all.

i've been so nervous in recent weeks that my body has taken on a complete digestive rebellion. food just doesn't appeal to me lately, especially in wake of the aftermath i know is coming. my love for food seems to overcome this; i recall many piano recitals where i nibbled nervously as i awaited my call to the stage. i also tried the glenn gould version of soaking my arms and hands in warm-hot water, but food always appealed to me more.

today: confirmed that my major is open. will pursue english with an emphasis in creative writing. still debating the whole literary journalism thing: considering a minor in that field. discovered that the online application process is only available from july 18 - august18. this resulted in much head scratching since the application acceptance period is from july 1 - july 31. a little annoyed, i grab pdf's from the website so i can familiarize myself with the process. seriously consider the need to meet with a counselor so i get this right on the first try.

::literary exchange::

an idea occurs to me, especially with the recent mention on lauren's blog of a lack of things to read (ie. books), to propose a book exchange between friends (or more, if others reading this blog are interested). media mail is a pretty reasonable way to send books, and it would be a nice way to expand our horizons to mail each other stuff we've read. maybe mention a few of your favorite books in the comments box and i will try to organize something. you may also email me at muse at furiousmuse dot com. suggestions on this are welcome.

another thing, and i've been meaning to harass lauren about it: we should start a literary 'zine! even if it only starts out in blog form. that would be a ton of fun, and encourage us all to write something and contribute. again, please let me know if you're interested, either in the comments box or via email. if you happen to be reading this on livejournal (where the 'muse runs in syndication) then please visit the actual site to log your thoughts.

jokers, jesters, pranks & spammers need not apply.

::bbq::

a few observations as of late. we've had guests since monday (sunday night, actually) and it's been great to enjoy the company. i almost feel as though i, too, am on vacation. however, it's been difficult to blog. as i may have mentioned earlier, moments of brilliance seem to peak while i'm driving somewhere and by the time i get home, the inspiration is gone. tonight is a necessary but somewhat forced (and not spellchecked) dialogue.

on two seperate occassions today i saw old ladies (2, but one at a time) pushing their walkers along busy thoroughfares in the blazing hot sun. at first, driving up camino capistrano, i turned to my guests and exclaimed something to the effect of "should we help her?" since, of course, it was at least 80 degrees outside and she had a jacket on. the second time, driving up marguerite parkway, i shouted outloud to no one in particular (the jetta being sans passengers) "dude, what is UP with the old ladies today?" perhaps this doesn't play out well on paper, but i'm tellin' you, it was friggin' weird man.

we christened the barbeque tonight (finally!) with kabobs and beer (sort of). i also went swimming for the first time in at least 3 years.

my stomach's been bugging me and i experienced some pinpricks of pain for about an hour and i aggrevated it by worrying over what was causing it. so i called josh & he's now asked jason to hook me up with a former coworker at uci so i can make certain that, when i turn in my application next month i get all my ducks in a row. secretly, which is now not so, i'm terrified to be making such a committement as this. this is what i want to do (for now: i'm not against change, but i've never really chosen what i wanted to do in the first place). it's a big step for me, but i've been working at it for so long now. i'm excited about the work coming to fruition. but it suddenly seems like it's all happening so fast.

today was a day off from work. i have started to adjust to the idea that day off plus relaxing doesn't equal laziness or doing nothing.

::life w/o email::

my personal email has been down all day. and though i doubt i've received anything of massive urgency, the fact that i am unable to RECEIVE or SEND is moderately unnerving. in the absence of email, i have washed my car, eaten lunch, and played with my cats.

i miss my word of the day.

::she's a good girl::

i find it increasingly annoying that commenters comment on posts that are months and months old. recent events which greeted me upon return from nyc leave me wondering: a)how did you get that far back in my archives? and b) if you're going to comment, at least make up a name so i can address you properly! because you've left no name, i am forced to give you a name, anonymous commenter. i will call you "buster".

well, buster, i appreciate the fact that you read my site. i really do. i know there are a fair number of readers here who browse but never leave me a note to let me know they were here. i'm so glad you took the time to do so!

concerning your comment from this january post, where you wrote:
It actually should read - running in circles, chasing tails
Anonymous 06.06.05 - 9:59 am
allow me a moment of explanation. first, you are right, the lyrics i posted are incorrect. i shamelessly admit to cutting and pasting from some generic website that has lyrics to, like, a billion songs and i guess THEY messed up (avoids blame). HOW-ever, your correction led me in search of the correct lyrics to confirm your allegations. what better way to do this than to consult my Wise Publications book of sheet music for the best answer possible. though i admit that sometimes what is published and was is actually sung may differ, i've listened to "the scientist" about 4 times in a row now and it sounds pretty durn close to this, which is printed thusly:
running in circles, coming up tails
so, buster, you see, we were both wrong. thank you for bringing this very important issue to my attention. i must now go suck my thumb and contemplate my naval/the meaning of life.

::shakes & blinks::

got in the ol' vw jetta this morning and she blinked, flickered, and clicked repeatedly at me, but she wouldn't wake up.

then i came upstairs to blog about it as i waited for josh to wake up. sitting down, the ground beneath me began to roll and i realized we were having an earthdquake.

it doesn't help that i dreamt that i was on oprah last night.

::gate 4::

our trip to nyc has been lovingly catalogued in over 300 pictures and I Love Our Digital Camera. i'd also like to offer mad props to wi-fi c/o jet blue and our wonderful repose at the chelsea lodge. super affordable (though slightly claustrophobic, as i've mentioned earlier), quick access to nearby subways (the c,e and 1, 9). unlike last year, we chose wisely. though our timing was not wise or fast enough to snag tickets to the hottest show in town (spam-a-lot) we still managed to enjoy ourselves thoroughly. we closed the evening last night in peaceable tranquility at the burp castle. the mug of casteel was slightly warmer than i like my beer, but the company was swell and we will miss our nyc buddies, lauren & joe, dearly. the trip is coming to a close now as it's only a half hour until departure. the subway ride was amazingly painless. boarding calls!

::subway sunshine::

i am ever facinated by our subway travels & our walks on the town. yesterday (or recently...how swiftly the memories bleed from one day to the next) we were serenaded (as i supressed a case of the giggles) by a man singing "under the boardwalk". what surprises me most about this and other impromptu performances is that most of these people have quite a bit of talent. teamed up with the street performers we saw in union square and you just might start a revue! we watched a strong-man/dance act worthy of cirque du soleil (though prodigy wasn't the greatest band to groove to, it made for intense accompaniment to their body-bending moves). then the funk band who set up a hundred feet away. they were impressive up to the point where they cut one song short in order to dispell with the beligerant irishman who was brown-bagging it and harassing the drummer (i want to play your drums!).

we ate at joe's pizza for dinner. ummm, pizza!

::in a world bound by tradition::

(in your best movie trailer voice) the diary of three days in a 2.5 foot square shower are not pretty. i love our lodgings here in the n-y-c. and the fact that they're so rockin' cheap contributed to us being able to make the trip in the first place. and the wi-fi simply rocks pants to the nth degree for the purpose of blogging and checking email (which i have been trying to do as little as possible--i much prefer writing in my travel journal and being oblivious to the world). but this shower, i tell ya, these muggy days have made that thing the bane of my existence. trying to shave under my arms resulted in uneven results (the hair at the base of my underarms looks suspiciously untouched, possibly the victim of an unsuspecting mullet-shave). as for consistent temperature, watch the back and elbow, as bumping into the nudge-sensitive water-temperature-control-thingy (aka handle) results in a blazing hot or freezing cold exclamation. but at least this shower is in our room and not shared with the other folks who are staying here. in other news, so what if i had to shave my legs one at a time in the sink. also, proudly, we're still on west coast time. more to come, but it's more important to get out of this room before the walls close in on us and experience the city.

::one hundred percent chance of delays::

i should be on a plane right now, an hour outside of the oc, happily napping or chewing up my latest read. instead, i'm blazin' the wi-fi in the lbc waiting for our plane to be fixed and wondering why, exactly, we are not allowed to transfer to a flight that leaves in 40 minutes. they haven't really given us a reason (ie. the flight is already full) but i've heard other ideas tossed around concerning security. the voice on the speakers announces that the other flight to new york is boarding and i'm still sitting here with no place to run, no place to hide. and all that moaning for naught: they are done! here we go!

::a-mused::

etta james' "at last" is playing on the radio and the fur is flying in the hallway between my two cats right now. i'm quite sure there's nothing funnier this morning.

::better than::

blogging is finally paying off! i received a check in the mail this week for my incredible efforts here on the 'muse for...a buck eighty-five. proudly, the check is displayed on the refrigerator door like a testament to some childish artwork. some fifty-thousand words (before blogger stopped keeping count) and nearly three years later, and i'm still at it. ah, it's all about the little rewards in life, now, isn't it?

this is where i lose my steam. i frequently find myself blogging in my head while i'm driving, and i'd probably audioblog from the road more if it weren't for the fact that creativity general ventures on the silent side of my brain and open, moving lips and mouth result in utter chaos and lack of brilliant sentence structure. aka, my thoughts always sound better in my head than when spoken out loud. recent musings:
? how can macy's south coast plaza women's store get away with the battle of the bands? apparently, when interviewing an employee about the conflicting tunes (u2 singing vertigo makes for a poor duet when teamed with duran duran's rio) i discovered that there is a)"macy's music" and b)"department music" and that the speakers for both are disasterously intermingled. calvin klein, donna karen, i love ya, but i won't spend a dime if i have to sacrifice my ears. as so aptly put by the employee at the end of the conversation/complaint, most people are probably too busy to notice (as she was). well, not everyone is musically inclined. but it'll be a long time before i shop that particular store again.

? why in the world did swallows choose my house to build a nest on? i've been meaning to take pictures, too. does anyone know how many months i need to wait until they've had their babies and everyone's vacated the nest?

? i didn't know that better than ezra had a new album... i used to like them in high school

? i've heard hollaback girl twice on the radio and frankly, don't understand the hype.

? who gave rob thomas the right to become his own boy band? shame on you for your lyrics rob. time to hire someone for that and stick to pumping out tunes. i'm referring to the title track on something to be: Hey man / I don't wanna hear about love no more / I don't wanna talk about how I feel / I don't really wanna be me no more / Dress down now I look a little too / Boy next door / Maybe I should try to find a downtown whore / That'll make me look hardcore / I need you to tell me what to stand for /
stand UP for the fact that rhyming is not a prerequisite to lyrics & poetry. especially when they're this lame. i appreciate your need to be edgy, but all this demonstrates is a lack of creativity. you could take a lesson from tori amos as far as storytelling through lyrics. (in response from his quote on atlantic's website to the effect that 'Ever since I can remember, I've always wanted to tell stories, but I never had the patience to sit down at a typewriter and write short stories or anything like that. I started writing songs as a way of communicating ideas the best way I could.' - Rob Thomas
that said, the album is number 19 on iTunes today for top selling albumns. so the public & i, we differ on this issue.

? what's this about losing steam? oh, yeah. right about now. where i neglect to spellcheck and reread for grammatical errors. bless me for i have sinned.

::nudges::

there's a lot on my mind these days, and with the email announcing zoetrope's short fiction contest, my wheels are beginning to turn on what i could possibly submit to them. yea, short fiction!

that said, i'm busy making plans and forming ideas for the big apple, so i'll see you when i return.
